Wailua River Corridor · Where River Meets Sea

You are standing at one of the most storied intersections on Kauaʻi — the place where the Wailua River meets the Pacific Ocean. The Wailua River is the only fully navigable river in all of Hawaiʻi, and for centuries its mouth was a place of arrival, departure, and ceremony. Ancient voyagers pulled their canoes ashore here. Chiefs traveled its waters inland to the heiau that lined its banks.

The land surrounding this bay was part of the sacred Wailua ahupuaʻa, a corridor of immense spiritual and political significance to Kauaʻi's highest-ranking aliʻi. Just inland from where you stand, a series of heiau — Hawaiian temples — mark the landscape. Hikina a ka Lā Heiau, the easternmost point of the ahupuaʻa, sits just to your south, oriented to greet the rising sun.

The resort era transformed the coastline here as it did throughout east Kauaʻi, but the river remains. At dawn, the light off Wailua Bay is something people remember for years. Look toward Sleeping Giant ridge to the west and you can begin to understand why the aliʻi chose this valley as their center of power on the island.
